Patti Pics Vision Screening

The Patti Pics Visual Acuity Charts are an improved test for vision screening and testing for 3-5 year olds in the preschool setting. Patti Pics uses universal symbols, which are different than tests that use letters, or other symbols. This test is also beneficial to a child that has an eye disorder or amblyopia (lazy eye).

Here is a printable handout of the steps shown below

Below are steps for proper use and printable handouts:

Steps:

Place the Patti Pics Acuity Chart on a well-lit wall at the same height as the child.

1.

2.

Sit with the child and show them the pictures on the card that is accompanied by the chart.

There are 5 pictures on the card (circle, star, square, apple, and house). Make sure the child can identify the photos.

Grab a tape measure and measure 10 feet (3 meters or 32.8 inches) from the chart and mark the floor with either masking tape or the foot placement guide provided to the right.

3.

Have child stand with their toes on the tape.

4.

5.

If the child needs assistance, have one adult sit next to the child to guide them through the screening.

Have a second adult stand next to the eye chart.

6.

Begin with screening on both eyes.

Start with the pictures at the top of the acuity chart. Do not leave the pointer close to the symbol because it makes fixation easier.

Point to one picture in each of the first 3 rows.

If child says they do not see the pictures in the first 3 rows, try again. If they still do not see, mark this as a referral for vision on the sheet provided to the right.

7.

If child says they can see the top 3 rows of the chart, then proceed to the next 3 rows.

Point to one picture in each row.

In the last row they say they can see in, point out 3-5 symbols to identify correctly. Visual acuity is recorded as the last line that they can identify symbols correctly.

Write down the value of the last row they can see. This value is located on the left hand side of the chart.

Example: 20/40, 20/50, 20/20, etc.

8.

After first screening with both eyes, have the child place their palm over one eye (you can also use an eye patch, paper, or anything else that is not see-through)

9.

Repeat steps 5-8 for the process of the right and the left eye.

**Don't forget to record values for each side!
