
How To Use The Audiometer
The audiometer is a tool where the child will have a picture board in front if them and the headset on.
The headset will tell the child a word and the child is supposed to point to the corresponding visual
on the picture board.

WHERE TO SET UP?
Find a quiet room with a desk or table. You want minimal noise and distractions.
Remember: background nose can distract the child and affect the results of the audiometer test!
HOW TO SET UP?
Four easy steps
locate headset jacks on the rear panel of the Audiometer.
The audiometer can test two kids at the same time but you can also do it individually.
Plug the Operator earphone into the Operator earphone jack. The volume can be adjusted by
"sliding" the control next to the jack to the left and right.
Plug electrical cord into the rear panel.
Plug the AC adapter into a nearby wall outlet and turn it on!

WHAT DO THE KEYS MEAN?

Press START to begin. If the series is already in progress when this key is pressed, the series will end.

Press TEST EAR to choose the ear being screened. The right or left bird will light up to tell you which ear is being tested. Press the TEST EAR again to switch to the other ear.

PAUSE will light up the butterfly indicator light and will pause the series in progress. To continue, press PAUSE again.

There are 4 series in the test. The light on the tail of the airplane will show the progress. The SERIES key will advance you to the next section.

To test older children, try using PURE TONE. This means that when you press the START key to begin, you will not need the picture board. Instruct the child to raise his/her hand every time they hear a tone. They should hear tones at 40dB, 30dB, and 20dB and at 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz. While doing PURE TONE, have the child face away from the Audiometer so they cannot see you turning the dial.

If this is a Bilingual Audiometer, hold the START and TEST EAR keys while turning on the unit to choose a language.

**Most states define a normal hearing level for speech recognition at 25dB. Check with your state or the American Speech-Language Hearing Association for requirements.
SCORING THE RESULTS
Mark a check for correct answers and an X for incorrect answers or an NR for a no response on the score pad. There could be outside influences on the child's performance so make sure to test the child twice before giving a referral. These scoring pads can be printed below

How to Enter Into ChildPlus
This screening is done in the Fall. In the Fall it is one of the 45 day requirements.
· Event Date – The date the screening took place
· StaTus – Passed/Complete, Failed 1st, need Rescreen, Failed 1st, or needs Referral
· Description—Enter the tool you used to screen the child. Either Audiometer or OAE
· Results—L=, R=
· Agency Worker – Your name
· Notes—Timestamp your entry. Document discussions and follow-up with parent.

To make sure the child knows what all the pictures are, have the child point to each picture and identify them. You can print them out below.

The best way to engage the child is to tell them they are going to be playing a game. Tell the child that the Audiometer needs his/her help and it will ask some questions.

Make it fun! This helps reduce anxiety associated with screening.

Make sure the headset fits snuggly and air is away from child's ear.
**Place red earphone on right ear
Explain that the machine will be asking where a picture is and they will have to point to it. Explain that the voice will start out loud and get softer and softer so they need to listen very carefully.

Place the operator earphone over your ear. You will hear all the same questions as the child but the volume does not become softer and you can adjust your volume level by moving the volume control on the rear.
4. Turn on the Audiometer.

You and the child will hear a voice that says, "Okay, let's look at the pictures," followed by a command. The first phrase will be heard by the child at 50dB and the following phrase volume will decrease by 5dB. There are 10 phrases in each series.

In testing most children, it is only necessary to complete the first two series. Series 3 and 4 are generally used for re-testing.
